MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1939

Poland: Second German ultimatum to Warsaw Garrison. Mass air attack on the city: 400 bombers and Stukas make repeated sorties, starting huge fires.

Sea War Atlantic: Debut of Ju 88 dive-bomber in attack on carrier HMS Ark Royal and battlecruiser Hood (no damage). Goebbels claims destruction of the carrier.
Anti-U-boat minefield laid across Straits of Dover (completed October 23).

Home Front Germany: Bread and flour rationed. Distribution of food ration cards completed.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 1939

Poland: Massive indiscriminate artillery bombardment of Warsaw, followed by major German infantry assault; city centre in flames.
Poles recapture Mokotow Airport and six hastily rebuilt aircraft fly out (night, 26-27).

Home Front France: Communist Party declared illegal.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1939

Poland: (MAIN EVENT) Germans overrun outer defences of Warsaw; Garrison Commander offers to surrender (talks held in bus on city outskirts) .

Air War: RAF announce total of 18 Millions leaflets dropped over Germany since night of September 3-4.

Western Front: Hitler tells astonished generals that he intends to attack France on November, 12.

Home Front Britain: First War Budget: big increase in standard rate of income tax from 5s 6d to 7s 6d (37 1/2 p) in £1.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 1939

Poland: Armistice between Warsaw Garrison and German besiegers from noon.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1939

Diplomacy: Russo-German 'Treaty of Frontier Regulation and Friendship' signed, partitioning Poland and defining spheres of influence.
Joint Declaration issued calling for a peaceful settlement of the conflict between Germany and Britain.
Soviet-Estonian Mutual Assistance Pact: Soviet forces to be based in Estonia.

Home Front Britain: National Register taken.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 1939

Diplomacy: Polish Government-in-Exile and 'Cabinet of National Unity' formed in Paris under Raczkiewicz (President) and General Sikorski (P.M. and Minister of War).

Western Front: French forces begin stealthy retreat (night September 30 to 0ctober 1) from German territory occupied during Saar 'Offensive' (withdrawal completed October 4).

Air War: 15 Bf109s destroy a flight of five RAF Fairey Battles over the Saar.

Sea War Atlantic: 'Pocket-battleship' Admiral Graf Spee sinks SS Clement in South Atlantic, capturing the crew.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1939

Poland: German troops enter Warsaw and begin disarming the Garrison (120,000 officers and men).
Surrender of Hela, last Polish stronghold.
