Diplomacy: Pan-American Securit Zone established. USA and Latin American States forbid naval and air operations in sea areas up to 600 miles from their coasts.

Home Front Britain: Special tribunals begin to deal with 50,000 enemy aliens registered in London area.

Occupied Czechoslovakia: Czech National Army to be formed in France. Franco-Czech agreement signed.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1939

Western Front: French withdrawal from advanced positions in German territory (Warndt Forest and Saarbrucken Salient) completed.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1939

Sea War Atlantic: U-35 lands 28-man crew of torpedoed Greek SS Diamantis on Kerry coast, Southwest Ireland.

Occupied Poland: Nikita Khrushchev (secretary of Ukrainian Communist Party) announces the 'Communisation' of East Poland.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1939

Poland: (MAIN EVENT) End of Polish campaign. Germans 'mopping up' Polish troops still at large between river Vistula and river Bug.
Hitler flies to Warsaw and reviews victory parade.
105,000 Polish Soldiers escaped abroad to Romania (see Polish armed forces in exile).

Sea War: Eight groups of British and French warships hunt Admiral Graf Spee in Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
Pocket­battleship Deutschland sinks SS Stonegate in North Atlantic.

Diplomacy: Soviet-Latvian Mutual Assistance Pact. Soviet forces to be based in Latvia.

Home Front France: Chamber of Deputies prorogued and 26 Communist deputies arrested.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1939

Diplomacy: Hitler's 'Peace Plan' speech to the Reichstag. Hitler claims that the total collapse and partition of Poland has removed the necessity for war between Britain, France and Germany. Germany has no territorial claims against France. He calls for a peace conference, free trade, restoration of German colonies and arms limitation.

Poland: Last remnants of Polish Army (8,000 men) surrender to Germans at Kock, Southeast of Warsaw.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1939

Sea War: Transport of BEF to France completed - entirely without loss - under protection of British and French naval forces (161,000 troops, 24,000 vehicles and tanks and 140,000 t of supplies).

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1939

Diplomacy: Evacuation of the Baltic Germans. 50,000 German-speaking citizens of Latvia are to be 'repatriated' to the Reich (first group leaves by sea October 14). Similar repatriation scheme sub­sequently announced for Estonia (13,000 Germans) and completed November 21.
Finland accepts Soviet invitation to send delegation to Moscow to discuss border disputes (talks held October 12-14 and October 28-November 8).
