Air War: Raid on Scapa Flow: Ju 88s cripple training battleship, HMS Iron Duke (WWI Fleet flagship).

Diplomacy: Four-Power Conference at Stockholm, attended by Kings of Denmark, Norway, Sweden and President of Finland opens (ends October 19).

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1939

Diplomacy: Anglo-French-Turkish Treaty of Mutual Assistance signed. The treaty is aimed primarily against Russia, which was always been interested in Istanbul and the Dardanelles as a gateway to the Mediterranean. Turkey receives back the Sandzak of Alexandretta in northern Syria, which she had lost in WW1 to France.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1939

Sea War Atlantic: Germany warns that neutral merchant ships joining Allied convoys will be sunk without warning.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1939

Sea War Atlantic: French Force de raide (including world's fastest destroyers) escorts large Atlantic convoy (until October 30) and intercepts German SS Sante Fe.
RAF fighters shoot down 4 out of 9 He 115 seaplanes attacking convoy off the Humber.
