MONDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1939

Western Front: Biggest dogfight to date. Nine French Curtiss Hawk fighters shoot down 4 out of 27 Me 109D over the Saar.

Picture: While escorting a Potez 637 reconnaisssance aircraft over the lines, nine Curtiss Hawks of GC II/5 were engaged by a force of Messerschmitt Bf 109D fighters, assesses as being 27 strong. In the biggest dogfight to date, over the area between the Maginot and Siegfried Lines, the French pilots dispatches eight Bf 109s, four of which chrashed and four force-landed. Only one Hawk was shot down, Lt. Tremolet crash-landing this fighter, which was subsequently repaired and flown again.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1939

Western Front: Hitler postpones offensive planned for November 12 - and 13 further postponements follow at intervals until May 9, 1940.

Diplomacy: Queen Wilhelmina of Holland and King Leopold of Belgium appeal for peace and offer to mediate between combatants.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1939

Home Front Germany: (MAIN EVENT)BURGER-BRAUKELLER BOMB INCIDENT. Powerful bomb wrecks Munich beer hall (killing 8) minutes after vehement anti-British speech by Hitler, who predicts a five year war. Gestapo arrest hundreds of suspects. Goebbels blames the British.

Occupied Poland: Dr. Hans Frank installed as Nazi Governor-General. Consolidated plan to transport 600,000 Jews and 400,000 Poles from the incorporated territories to Frank's General­gouvernement by spring 1940 (operation begins December 1st).

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1939

Secret War: Venlo Incident. Two British Intelligence officers, Major Stevens and Captain Best, kidnapped by the Gestapo on Dutch-German border, while attempting to contact the German anti-Nazi movement (imprisoned until April 1945).

Diplomacy: King George VI and French President Lebrun issue cautious replies to Dutch-Belgian peace appeal.
King Carol of Rumania offers to mediate; rejected November 16.

Western Front: First ENSA (Entertainments National Service Association) concert for British and French troops in France, starring Maurice Chevalier and Gracie Fields.

Neutral Holland and Belgium: Dutch and Belgian Foreign Ministers meet at Breda, Holland.
