Sea War: British Goverment orders seizure of German exports on the high seas in reprisal for magnetic mine campaign.

Sino-Japanese War: Japanese capture Nanning, important railhead in south west China.

Neutral Norway: Nobel Committee of Norwegian Parliament announces cancellation of 1939 Nobel Peace Prize.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 1939

Diplomacy: USSR renounces Soviet-Finnish Non-Aggression Pact (signed 1932).
Finns inform Moscow that investigations show that Russian artillery fired the 7 shells at Mainila (see November 26, 1939).

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1939

Diplomacy: USSR severs diplomatic relations with Finland.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1939

WINTER WAR: (MAIN EVENT) RUSSIAN INVASION OF FINLAND. 26 divisions attack on four fronts at Karelian Isthmus, North of lake Ladoga, in the 'Waist', and at Petsamo (Arctic), supported by 900 aircraft and Baltic and Northern Fleets.
Helsinki and Viipuri bombed, mass evacuation of civilians.
Field Marshal Mannerheim (aged 72) appointed 'Defender of Finland' and C-in-C.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1939

Winter War Finland: Helsinki bombed (80 killed, November 30 - December 1).
Finnish coalition government formed, including Ryti (P.M.) and Tanner (Foreign Minister).

Neutral Scandinavia: Widespread pro-Finnish demonstrations.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 2, 1939

Winter War Finland: Finnish covering forces (13,000 men) on Karelian Isthmus slowly withdrawing to the Mannerheim Line. Mines and traps destroy numbers of Russian tanks.
Helsinki Olympic Games (planned for 1940) abandoned.

Sea War: German SS Watussi scuttled off South Africa, under shellfire from battlecruiser HMS Renown.

Diplomacy: Finnish Goverment appeals to the League of Nations.
Soviet puppet People's Government of the Finnish Democratic Republic established under Finnish communist Otto Kuusinen at Terijoki on Gulf of Finland.
US Goverment proposes 'moral embargo' on sale of American arms to countries guilty of 'terror' bombing from the air.

Western Front: French communique reports: 'A quiet day on the whole of the front.... the air forces, on both sides, were completely inactive'.

Neutral Sweden: Army reservists called up and minefield laid off the East Coast.
