MONDAY, DECEMBER 25, 1939

Winter War, Finland: (MAIN EVENT) On a cold Christmas Day (-30°C), Helsinki, Viipuri and over 30 other Finnish towns and villages bombed or strafed, railways also attacked. Finnish fighters and AA guns destroy or damage 20 bombers.

Western Front: Hitler on 3-day visit.

Home Front Britain: The King broadcasts a Christmas message to the Empire.

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 26, 1939

Diplomacy: USA and twenty Latin American States issue joint protest against River Plate Battle infringement of Pan-American 'Security Zone' (rejected by Britain on January 15; by Germany, February 1, 1940).

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 27, 1939

Winter War, Finland: Civilians evacuated from Viipuri.

Sea War: Defensive minefield to be laid off British East Coast, from Moray Firth to Thames Estuary.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 28, 1939

Winter War, Finland: Russian High Command orders preparations for coordinated, step-by-step assault on Mannerheim Line.

Sea War Atlantic: U-30 torpedoes battleship HMS Barham (slight damage).

China: Repeated Japanese bombing raids on Lanchow, vital Chinese military supply base (northwest China).

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1939

Winter War, Finland: Russians bomb Viipuri and other towns.

Diplomacy: Britain and France inform League of Nations that they will give all possible assistance to Finland.

Home Front Britain: Road accident deaths (September-December 1939) total 4,130 (only 2,511 killed in military operations over same period).
15,626 people registered as conscientious objectors.

Home Front Germany: Hitler's New Year Proclamation to Nazi Party: Germany's war aim is the final defeat of the British 'warmongers and war-declarers'.

Sea War, Shipping Losses 1939:
Allied and Neutral: 225 ships totalling 767,358 t.
German: 9 U-boats.
