MONDAY, APRIL 29, 1940
Norway: British troops land at Bodo.
Cruiser HMS Glasgow transports King Haakon, Crown Prince Olav and Norwegian government from Molde to Tromso. Norwegian government issues declaration condemning German 'terrorism' - members of the government having personally witnessed such acts of violence against unarmed and innocent Norwegian civilians.
Sea War: U-50 sunk by destroyers HMS Amazon and HMS Witherington off Shetlands.
British submarine Unity rammed and sunk by SS Atle Jarl off the Tyne.
Air War: Empire Air Training Scheme. Training of pilots and air crews begins at schools in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Picture: DeHaviland DH82 Tiger Moth, the standard RAF elementary trainer. It was build at Hatfield (795 plus 1,611 pre-war) and by Morris (3,210) in Great Britain and in Canada (1,520), Australia (1,085) and New Zealand (344).

TUESDAY, APRIL 30, 1940
Norway: British commence evacuation of Andalsnes, Molde and Alesund (completed night May 1-2).
German columns from Oslo and Trondheim link up in central Norway. Hitler issues congratulatory Order of the Day.
Air War: He 111, carrying magnetic mine, is damaged by AA fire and crashes in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex. Four-man crew and two civilians killed, 156 people injured, 50 houses wrecked.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 1, 1940
Norway: British troops evacuated from Alesund.
Germans counter-attack near Narvik (and on May 2); attack repulsed.
German forces link up between Oslo and Bergen.
Surrender of 4,000 Norwegian troops, trapped at Lillehammer.

THURSDAY, MAY 2, 1940
Norway: Evacuation of Namsos: British and French troops leave ruined town night May 2-3. Stukas attack May 3, sinking French destroyers Afridi and Bison.
British troops land at Mosjoen.
Sea War Mediterranean: Chamberlain announces that powerful Anglo-French fleet is en route to Alexandria.

FRIDAY, MAY 3, 1940
Norway: Surrender of Norwegian forces in Trondheim area.
Western Front: Hitler postpones Gelb offensive from May 5 to May 6 (further postponements on May 4,5, 7 and 8).
General Huntziger, CO French 2nd Army, orders demolition of anti-tank obstacles (built without his sanction !) on two main roads from Ardennes forest.
Secret War: Colonnel Oster of the Abwehr tells Colonnel Sas, Dutch military attache in Berlin, that Germany will attack Low Countries soon (probably May 8).
Air War: RAF bomb Ry (Denmark), Fornebu and Stavanger airfields.

SATURDAY, MAY 4, 1940
Sea War: Polish destroyer Grom bombed and sunk off Narvik.
Norway: British troops land at Mo, south of Narvik.

Picture: Aerial picture from Narvik. The importance of the city was to be the clearly visible railway connection to Lulea for the Swedish iron.
Secret War: Papal Nuncio warns King Leopold of Belgium that German attack is imminent.

SUNDAY, MAY 5, 1940
Norway: French Foreign Legionnaires and Polish troops land at Harstad (near Narvik) and Tromso (north of Narvik).
Secret War: Kapitaen Hermann Goertz, of the Abwehr, lands by parachute nearDublin. He subsequently establishes contact with Irish Army officers and the IRA (Goertz detained by Irish authorities in November 1941).
