MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 1940

Air War, Battle of Britain: RAF foils series of intended raids on London, Thameshaven, Tilbury and aircraft factories.
Losses:
German, 23; British, 20.
Bombs jettisoned at many points from Canterbury to Chelsea and Kingston.
Luftwaffe Command staff divides London into two target areas: 'A', East End and Docks; 'B', West London, including power station and 'provision installations'. Daylight raids to be carried out by Luftflotte 2 and night raids by Luftflotte 3.
Night raids on London by 190 aircraft; Somerset House hit. 370 killed, 1,400 injured.

Air War: Italian bombers (4 lost) raid Tel-Aviv (Palestine) killing 111; leaflets dropped on Jaffa promise freedom for Palestinian Arabs.

Neutrals, USA: US Navy orders 7 battleships, 12 aircraft carriers and 191 other warships.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1940

Air War: Little daylight activity; 'hit-and-run' raiders attack airfields and Portsmouth Dockyards. 148 night raiders sent to London, but massive AA barrage from 199 guns forces many of them to turn away and jettison bombs over suburbs. Buckingham Palace damaged by delayed-action bomb. Casualties: 180 killed, 280 injured.

Sea War Atlantic: Following bombing of 66,000 t of shipping in Port of London since September 7, all ocean-going ships are banned from London until Januay 1941.

Sea War Mediterranean: Italian Expeditionary Corps transported from Brindisi to Albania in readiness for invasion of Greece.

Home Front Germany: Number of Panzer divisions to be doubled from 10 to 20 for planned May 1941 invasion of USSR.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1940

Air War: Dover suffers its worst attack of the war.

Sea War: Vichy French squadron (3 cruisers and 3 destroyers) makes high-speed dash in daylight through Straits of Gibraltar, ludes British Force H and reaches Dakar, French West Africa (night September 14-15).

Home Front Britain: Lord Mayor of London opens Air Raid Relief Fund: £5 Millions received by October 5.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 1940

Air War: RAF Bomber Command attacks Hamm marshalling yards for sixtieth time (night September 12-13).

Occupied Poland: 500,000 Warsaw Jews to be confined in walled ghetto.

Vichy France: Five French schoolboys discover 10,000-year-old wall paintings of animals and hunters in Lascaux Cave (Dordogne).

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1940

North Africa: (MAIN EVENT) ITALIAN INVASION OF EGYPT. 10th Army occupies Sollum.

Air War: 5 bombs dropped on Buckingham Palace by daylight raider.

Sea War Atlantic: Battleships HMS Hood, Nelson and Rodney leave Scapa Flow for Rosyth to counter threatened German invasion.

Home Front Germany: Government to subsidize voluntary evacuation of children from Berlin to safer areas.

China: Debut of Japan's Mitsubishi Zero fighter: 13 Zeros escort bomber formation to Chungking and shoot down all defending fighters (20-plus); 4 Zeros damaged.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1940

Air War: Bombs dropped on Kingston, Wimbledon, Brighton, Eastbourne, Ipswich and in Northwestern England. These relatively successful daylight raids in cloudy weather encourage Goring to believe that Fighter Command is weakening.
Losses: German, 8; British, 13.
Bomber Command sinks many invasion barges in ports between Boulogne and Antwerp.

Sea War: Hitler postpones final decision on Operation Sea Lion until September 17.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 1940

Air War: BATTLE OF BRITAIN SUNDAY. Two major raids on London smashed by RAF, which claims 185 'kills'; Germans actually lose 53 aircraft, plus 16 damaged. 26 British fighters shot down; 13 pilots killed. Bombs scattered widely across London; Buckingham Palace hit. Unsuccessful diversionary raids on Southampton and Portland.
Heavy night raids on London by 180 aircraft (1 lost). 1,000-kg delayed-action bomb removed from deep crater near St Paul's Cathedral and exploded on Hackney Marshes.
RAF night raids on Berlin and invasion barges at Antwerp.

Total losses in the Battle of Britain from August 8 - September 15, 1940:
800 fighters of the RAF Fighter Command
663 fighters of the Luftwaffe
691 bombers of the Luftwaffe
